Birds are warm-blooded vertebrates in the class Aves, characterized by feathers, wings, beaks, and egg-laying reproduction. Most birds can fly, though some species like ostriches and penguins cannot.
Birds evolved from theropod dinosaurs and first appeared about 150 million years ago. Today there are over 10,000 species found in nearly every habitat on Earth.
Their bodies are adapted for flight, with lightweight skeletons, strong chest muscles, and efficient lungs with air sacs. Feathers provide insulation and help with flight and display.
Birds have diverse diets including seeds, fruit, insects, fish, and small animals. They communicate using calls, songs, and visual displays, and many species build nests and care for their young.
Birds play important roles in ecosystems as pollinators, seed dispersers, and predators of insects. However, many species face threats from habitat loss, climate change, and human activity.
